King Saul began well, but it did not take him long to slip into the sin of disobedience by buckling under outward pressure (1 Samuel 13). Samuel later gave Saul specific instructions to utterly destroy Amalek and all that he had, but Saul made the presumptuous decision to redefine the Lord’s commands by sparing Agag and saving the best of the spoil. This act of rebellion marked the turning point in Saul’s life, and the hand of the Lord was no longer upon him. In spite of Saul’s excuses and sorrow, the kingdom would be torn from him and given to a better man who would obey the Lord.

Prayer: Lord, I see the danger in rationalizing disobedience by redefining Your commands. Please keep me from the sins of presumption and rebellion so that I will walk in the obedience of humility.
