Our identity in Christ stems from the work of the Trinity:
- God the Father adopted us.
- Christ redeemed us.
- The Holy Spirit sealed us.
The first truth is that God adopted us. This was a purposeful choice, “according to the kind intention of His will” (Ephesians 1:5 NASB). It entails a complete renewal of our identity; no longer do we adhere to our old family identity in Adam, but He has given us a new name in Christ.
The second truth is that Christ redeemed us. By the blood of the cross, He took away our inheritance of death in Adam and gave us a new inheritance in Him. He paid the price for us because we could not save ourselves from sin.
The third truth is that the Holy Spirit sealed us. This is the Spirit of promise, the One “who is given as a pledge of our inheritance” (Ephesians 1:14). Because of the Holy Spirit, we can have hope in the midst of the suffering of this life. No one escapes a broken story in this world. But the Holy Spirit reminds us who and whose we are.
Part of living out the truth of our identity in Christ stems from choosing to believe what God has told us in Scripture, contrary to what our feelings and experiences may have told us. The world seeks to define us on its own terms, but we must define ourselves on God’s terms.
We must train ourselves to see the dignity, the security, the profundity, and the riches of our true identity.
