Daily Scripture

From Handbook to Scripture

In spite of Joseph’s ups and downs, it is clear from this account that the Lord was with him and would not abandon him. Joseph found favor in Potiphar’s sight, and the Egyptian’s household prospered under Joseph’s prudent management. Potiphar’s implicit trust in Joseph suddenly came to an end when his wife accused Joseph of attempted rape after Joseph refused her enticing offers. Thus, Joseph was rewarded with prison for his actual fidelity and moral character. Even there, however, the hand of the Lord remained upon him as he was being prepared for God’s good purposes.

Lord, when I consider Joseph’s difficulties, it is easy to see how he could have despaired and wondered if the dreams You gave him would ever be fulfilled. I ask that you would give me the grace to cling to Your character in times when my circumstances seem hopeless and pointless.

Daily Prayer

From Handbook to Prayer

The hour is coming and now is, when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth. (John 4:23–24)

Those who obey Christ’s commandments abide in Him, and He in them. And this is how I know that He abides in me: by the Spirit whom He has given me. (1 John 3:24)

Pause to reflect upon these biblical affirmations.

We know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for our sakes He became poor, that we through His poverty might become rich. (2 Corinthians 8:9)

Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift! (2 Corinthians 9:15)

Pause to offer your own expressions of thanksgiving.

I will not fear, for You are with me;
I will not be dismayed, for You are my God.
You will strengthen me and help me;
You will uphold me with Your righteous right hand.
For You are the Lord my God, who takes hold of my right hand
And says to me, “Do not fear; I will help you.”
(Isaiah 41:10, 13)

I call this to mind,
And therefore I have hope:
The Lord’s mercies never cease,
For His compassions never fail.
They are new every morning;
Great is Your faithfulness.
(Lamentations 3:21–23)

Level 2 > Loving God Completely

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.” This is the great and foremost commandment. The second is like it, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets. (Matthew 22:37–40)
