Daily Scripture: Day 102—2 Kings 2

From Handbook to Scripture, Day 102

READING: 2 KINGS 2

When Elijah knew the Lord was about to take him into heaven by a whirlwind, he discouraged his protégé Elisha from following him to Bethel and then to Jericho. Elisha refused to leave him, and the prophets in both places realized that the Lord was about to take his master away. Significantly, the waters of the Jordan River parted to allow Elijah and Elisha to cross on dry ground, and before Elijah was taken up into heaven, Elisha asked for a double portion of his spirit.  Elisha took up the mantle of Elijah, parted the waters of the river, and the prophets recognized that the spirit of Elijah rested on Elisha.

Prayer: Lord, this amazing account of the way You took Your servant Elijah up to heaven in a chariot of fire and a whirlwind reminds me of how little I really know about You and how truly mysterious Your ways are to me. But I also know that the things You are preparing for me are beyond my imagination, and that they will make the sufferings of this present life pale in comparison.

Meditation passage: verses 9–12
