Daily Scripture: Day 107—2 Kings 8

From Handbook to Scripture, Day 107

READING: 2 KINGS 8

Elisha warned the Shunammite woman whose son he had restored to life about a seven-year famine the Lord was about to bring. The family sojourned in the land of the Philistines, and Elisha’s servant was instrumental in the restoration of their land after their return.

When Ben-Hadad, king of Syria, sent Hazael to Elisha to inquire if he would recover from his illness, Elisha told Hazael he would become king of Syria and ravage the children of Israel. The chapter concludes with an account of the wickedness of Joram, king of Israel, and Jehoram and Ahaziah, kings of Judah. In the ninth chapter, Elisha anoints Jehu as king over Israel who executes both Joram and Ahaziah.

Prayer: Lord, You are the Lord over history and the Judge of the rulers of the earth. Although the wicked often appear to gain the upper hand, You depose them in Your timing and raise up their replacements according to Your good pleasure. Your Word reminds me that although the unrighteous reign for a season, the righteous will reign with Christ forever.

Meditation passage: verses 11–13
