Daily Scripture: Day 128—Esther 1

From Handbook to Scripture, Day 128

READING: ESTHER 1

The book of Esther takes place in 483–473 BC during the reign of Ahasuerus king of Persia (486–464 BC). Although the name of God does not appear in this book, His sovereign protection of His people who were scattered in the provinces of Persia is evident in its pages.

When Ahasuerus (known to the Greeks as Xerxes) made a feast for the many officials of the Medo-Persian Empire, he displayed his opulence and served wine in abundance. Queen Vashti also made a feast for the women, but when Ahasuerus sent for Vashti to come and display her beauty to the officials, she refused to obey. The king’s counselors advised him to depose her to set an example throughout the empire that “every man should be the master in his own house.”

Prayer: Lord, I am reminded that the wealth and pomp of this world is fleeting and unsatisfying. Only those who find their identity and hope in You will enjoy true security, significance, and satisfaction.
