From Handbook to Scripture, Day 242
READING: JOHN 20
After a gripping account of Jesus’ arrest, trials, and crucifixion (18–19), John provides a vivid narrative of several post-resurrection encounters between the Lord and His disciples (20–21). John’s purpose statement is the clearest in Scripture: “But these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name” (31). The beloved disciple selected the seven miraculous signs in 1–12 and the resurrection in 20–21 to bring the reader into an understanding of who Jesus is and to elicit a response of personal trust in Him.
Jesus’ post-resurrection appearances to Mary Magdalene, the disciples without Thomas, and the disciples with Thomas were a source of unspeakable joy.
Prayer: Lord, I have believed that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and I have found life in His name. As You have sent Him, so He also sends me.
Meditation passage: verses 17, 19–21, 26–31
