Daily Scripture: Day 281—1 Corinthians 9

From Handbook to Scripture

READING: 1 Corinthians 9

Paul uses his own life to illustrate the twin principles of liberty in Christ and the law of love. As an apostle, he has a right to receive his living from the ministry of the word. However, to prevent the Corinthians from stumbling over the issue of his “charging” for the gospel, Paul chose to work for his living while he was in their midst. As he argued in Romans 14, believers must sometimes limit their liberty for the sake of those whose faith is weaker.

Paul did everything for the sake of the gospel, including adapting himself to varying circumstances in order to gain common ground without compromise. Although he understood his liberty, he disciplined himself so that he would not be disqualified from being rewarded at the end of his race.

Lord, as I grow in understanding of my true freedom in Christ, may I also consider the needs of others and limit my liberty, when necessary, to display the love of Jesus to them.
