Daily Scripture: Day 310—1 Thessalonians 5

From Handbook to Scripture

READING: 1 Thessalonians 5

Paul continues with a discourse on the future day of the Lord and exhorts the Thessalonians to be alert and self-controlled as children of the light whose destiny is to live together with Christ (5:1–11). The epistle ends with specific admonitions and instructions that relate to their sanctification (5:12–22) and with a benediction and parting thoughts (5:23–28).

Both of Paul’s Thessalonian epistles deal with matters of eschatology (prophecy), and all five chapters of 1 Thessalonians refer to the return of Christ (1:10; 2:19; 3:13; 4:13–18; 5:1–11, 23). The prophetic material in 4:13–5:11 is very vivid and practical, and this is one of the most important biblical passages concerning the coming of Christ.

Prayer

Lord, may I rejoice always, pray without ceasing, and in everything give thanks; for this is Your will for me in Christ Jesus.
