Daily Scripture: Day 85—1 Samuel 17

From Handbook to Scripture

READING: 1 SAMUEL 17

The Philistine threat loomed large when they put forward a giant of a champion to discourage and taunt the armies of Israel. Goliath’s defiant challenge brought great fear in the Israelite camp, and no one was willing to rise to fight the giant. When David heard about this, he was dismayed that this Philistine was successfully defying the armies of the living God. David’s complete trust in the Lord gave him a confidence and perspective that the rest of his countrymen lacked. He told Goliath that the Lord would deliver him into his hand, and his defeat of Goliath encouraged the men of Israel and Judah to pursue the Philistines to their own territory.

Prayer: Lord, this thrilling story reminds me once again that it is not the size of my opposition that matters but the power of my God. Let me walk in dependence upon the power of Your Spirit and put my confidence entirely in You.

Meditation passage: verses 26, 36, 46
