Colossians 4: Conduct Yourselves with Wisdom

God always fulfills His promises, and He always accomplishes His purposes. Previously, God had promised the Israelites that He would make the “sky like iron” and the “earth like bronze”, if they disobeyed Him and went after idols (Lev. 26:18–19; Deut. 11:16–17; 28:23–24). Israel, through the influence of Jezebel, began replacing the worship of the LORD with the worship of Baal (1 Kings 16:31). Elijah the prophet knew the Scriptures and predicted a drought would come, exclaiming to king Ahab, "As the LORD, the God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, surely there shall be neither dew nor rain these years, except by my word" (1 Kings 17:1). Further, in 1 Kings 17, in stories that closely resemble the ministries of Jesus, God demonstrates His power and provision by providing food where there had been none, and life where it had been lost (1 Kings 17:8–24; see also Matthew 14:13–21, Luke 7:11–17). The LORD is living, and His Word is true. We can take great comfort knowing that the LORD accomplishes all that He sets out to do. We can rest in His promises. So let us cling to Him, knowing that He is our source of spiritual nourishment and life. 1 Kings 17: God's Provision

The letter to the Colossians may be divided into two parts. Chapters 1 and 2 address doctrine, whereas chapters 3 and 4 offer application. Paul’s first command is to keep seeking the things above and not the things on Earth (Colossians 3:1). This echoes Jesus’ rebuke to Peter for not being concerned with the interests of God (Matthew 16:23). Paul reminds the Colossians that they now have a new life in Christ, a life that is yet to be fully revealed. Christ will come again, so we should live in light of the life to come. Colossians 3: The New Self
Reflections Ministries September 27, 2022 11:06 am
King Solomon’s quest for wealth, pleasure, and power in violation of the Deuteronomy 17 commands eventually led to his downfall. He turned his heart away from the LORD and sought after other gods. Because of this, God divided the kingdom, with Israel in the north (10 tribes) and Judah in the south (2 tribes). In the same way that Solomon’s wisdom eventually gave way to foolishness, so his son Rehoboam dealt with the people of Israel with foolishness. Evidently not as clever as his father, Rehoboam rejected the advice of the elders who had served his father previously and instead listened to his peers. He refused to ease the burden of labor on the people of Israel and instead promised to increase it. We learn that these events happened to establish the Word God spoke concerning the judgment He promised (1 Kings 11:30–40) because of Solomon’s disobedience. Even through the free actions of Rehoboam, God accomplished His plan and purposes. 1 Kings 12: The Kingdom Divided

Paul writes his letter to the Colossians to encourage them in Christ and to help them address false doctrine that was being perpetuated in their midst. Among the false doctrines promoted was an insidious legalism masquerading as piety that threatened the believers’ freedom and liberty in Christ (cf. Colossians 2:8, 16, 20–23). These philosophies and deceptions were not grounded in the truth of the gospel or in the person of Jesus Christ but rather were instigated by those who were more concerned with the traditions of men than with the truth of God.
