Daily Encouragement Day 164 – Proverbs 9

The proverbs themselves do not begin until chapter 10, and in this last preparatory chapter, wisdom is personified as a virtuous woman who invites those who lack understanding to come to her well-provisioned table.

These pithy sayings of Solomon and others cover a wide variety of issues, though for the most part, they are not arranged in any topical manner.  The Hebrew word mashal “proverb” means a comparison or a similitude, and the proverbs use figures of speech to make comparisons and penetrating insights.  The proverbs, based upon careful observations of accumulated experience, were designed to be easily committed to memory, and they are simple illustrations that expose fundamental realities about life.

Prayer:

Lord, thank You for Your gracious invitation to receive the abundance of life and blessings You offer.  I affirm that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
