Daily Encouragement Day 287: 2 Corinthians 8

The apostle appeals to the Corinthians to follow the Macedonians’ example of generosity by keeping their promise of contributing to the collection he was planning to bring to the believers in Judea (8-9).  These two chapters develop the central New Testament teaching on financial stewardship and illustrate a number of timeless principles.

Just as the believers in Macedonia gave with a sense of joyful participation in spite of their meager resources, so Paul encourages the Corinthians to be participants in the gracious work of God in contributing to the needs of others.  When we give ourselves first to the Lord (verse 5), then we are empowered to give ourselves to others by the will of God.

Prayer:

Lord, I glory in the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for our sake He became poor, so that we through His poverty might become rich.

Meditation passage for today: verses 3, 5, 9, 14, 21
