READING: 1 Chronicles 17
The books of 1 and 2 Chronicles are a retelling of the same stories as 1 and 2 Kings, focusing on the southern kingdom of Judah, from which the Messiah would come. After David’s kingdom was established, he began the construction of his palace and arranged to move the ark of the covenant up to the City of David in Jerusalem. He appointed an order of worship for the tabernacle and soon desired to build a permanent temple where God would be worshiped and the ark of the covenant would be placed. The prophet Nathan told the king that the Lord would build David a lasting dynasty and that David’s son would be the one who would build the temple for the Lord. David responded in gratitude and praise for these covenant promises, and asked that the Lord’s name would be magnified through his descendants forever.
Lord, I thank You for the promises of the Davidic Covenant and for Jesus, the Root and the Offspring of David, who fulfills these covenant blessings. I thank You that Jesus will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and that Your kingdom will never end.
