Daily Scripture: Day 87—2 Samuel 7

From Handbook to Scripture

READING: 2 SAMUEL 7

After David had firmly established his kingdom and attained rest from his enemies, his thoughts turned to honoring the Lord by building a permanent temple in Jerusalem to replace the tabernacle that had been built in the days of Moses. But the Lord told David through Nathan the prophet that it would not be him but his son after him who would build a house for His name. Instead of David building a house for God, it was God who would establish a house and a kingdom for David and for his descendants after him. David responded to this covenant God was making with him and his seed by praising the greatness of the Lord God and asking for God’s name to be magnified forever.

Prayer: Lord, I thank You for this Davidic Covenant, because it is perfectly fulfilled in the Person and work of the Lord Jesus. Indeed, in Jesus, the Root and the Offspring of David, You have established the throne of David’s kingdom forever.

Meditation passage: verses 12–16, 22
