You long for more than this world can provide. This is because you were made for eternity. God gave you these longings in order to cultivate an appetite for Himself. He wants you to come to know Him.
Your experiences here have been marked by suffering. Because of the Fall, we have to encounter pain and sorrow and mourning and death. But when Christ comes again with the new heavens and the new earth, there will be no pain, sorrow, mourning, or death. Instead, you will be satisfied with Christ, and you will have an expanding vision of God.
Even though we still struggle with sin and suffering in this world, we ultimately belong to Christ. Our identity is in Him, and we are seated in the heavenly places with Him (Ephesians 2:6). We are adopted children of God who have a new past, a new present, and a new future in Christ. We often don’t feel this truth, though, and so we need to review our identity in Christ.
Culture seeks to impose a narrative on you that is contrary to what God says. As a result, you need to be spending time in the Word more often than in the world. Immerse yourself in truth and deepen your relationship with Christ.
Part of the trouble we have with getting to know Christ and deepening our relationship with Him is that He is not physically tangible to us. The apostle Peter speaks into this in 1 Peter 1:8–9:
And though you have not seen Him, you love Him, and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, obtaining as the outcome of your faith the salvation of your souls.
Even though we do not see Him now, we can still know Him. He has revealed Himself in His Word, and we can know Him more as we study Scripture. Obeying Him also leads to a deeper relationship. We walk with Him in the power of the Holy Spirit, and one day, we will see Him face to face.
