Scripture gives us a twofold picture of humanity: dignity and depravity. We have dignity because we were created in the image of God. But that image has been marred by the Fall, leading us into depravity. Paul looks at these two aspects of humanity in Ephesians 2:1–7. Depravity and Separation from God Make no mistake about it: “you were dead in your offenses and sins” (Ephesians 2:1 NASB). Because of Adam and Eve’s sin, we turn away from God and defy Him. We seek to follow our own wills instead of submitting to His. We are engaged in spiritual warfare as a result of the Fall. As we look at what Scripture teaches, we see three things that work to pull us away from God: The world (“you previously walked according to the course of this world”; verse 2) The devil (“according to the prince of the power of the air”; verse 2) The flesh (“we too all previously lived in the lusts of our flesh”; verse 3) Before God, we had no life in this world. It was our very nature to be separate from God in the arrogance of autonomy, falling prey to the desires of the world, the flesh, and the devil. We have no way of changing our nature apart from God. Though we still retain the dignity that comes from bearing the image of God, we cannot restore ourselves. It’s not a matter of being resuscitated; we stand in need of resurrection. The Mercy of God Paul gives the best news to us in Ephesians—Jesus Christ, the One who was perfect and righteous, dwelling in light, came and took on our sin in the midst of our darkness. This is a profound and eternal mystery. The words “But God” in verse 4 show us the wealth of God’s mercy. He could have left us dead in our trespasses. But God loved us and saved us. He gave us new life in Jesus Christ—not because of anything we had done, but because of His rich mercy. We now walk by the Spirit in newness of life; sin no longer has dominion over us.

The Rich Mercy of God

We are God’s workmanship—intimately created, redeemed, and being transformed into the image Christ. But at what a cost! God the Father sent the Son to redeem us through His blood, and we are sealed by the Holy Spirit. This is a Trinitarian work, a beautiful picture that ought to increase our gratitude the more we understand it. As God’s workmanship, He prepared good works beforehand “so that we would walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10). We cannot contribute anything to God’s purposes, but we can participate in them. He gives us this dignity in His eternal purpose, though it is difficult for us to understand in this present time. God’s Gracious Gifts God graciously gives us resources in this present darkness that we should use and treasure. One of those resources is the Word of God. Consider the power of the Word of God—it equips and prepares us for acts of righteousness. Another resource is that of prayer. However, we ought not assume this is completely separate from His Word. Instead, praying Scripture back to God can be an enriching experience, deepening our faith as we adore Him, confess to Him, and then present our petitions. A third gift we may not think about is that of suffering. If everything went our way, chances are we would begin to take God for granted. We might even fall into the trap of thinking of Him as a sort of genie, granting us our every wish. But suffering is an opportunity for spiritual growth, one that can drive us to greater depths in prayer and in the Word. Brought Near to Jesus Christ Paul continues his examination of the human condition in Ephesians 2:11–13. At one time, we were all separated from Christ. Many of us walked in man-made religions, trusting in false gods and the works of our hands. But at the end of the day, only the blood of Christ can save us. It is through His sacrifice that He reconciles us to God. Therefore, let us not be imitators of this world, falling back into works to try to save us, but let us increase in gratitude for God, doing good works out of the assurance we have in Christ.

The Lord sought to establish the nation of Israel as a people for Himself. He would do so by a covenant, intimately drawing this people near to Him. But the people of Israel would not be faithful to God. Instead, they would enter into relationships with other nations, worshiping other gods. The Anticipation of the Old Covenant In Deuteronomy 29, Moses summons the Israelites before him in the plains of Moab in order to speak the words of the covenant to them. Moses began his speech by reminding the Israelites of the signs and wonders they saw in Egypt as well as in the wilderness. However, the Lord had not yet given them ears to hear or hearts to understand these wonders—they would need a new heart in order to do so. Moses gave the Israelites the old covenant, the law that would serve as a guide, teaching them of their need of Christ. In their current position, they were called to look forward to the new covenant (see Jeremiah 31:31). That is not to say the old covenant was wrong—instead, it was meant to point them to God while they waited for the fullness of His purposes for them. The Holiness of God’s Name When we read texts like Deuteronomy 29, we need to remember that God chose Israel not out of need but out of love. What He does ultimately brings glory to Himself, for He is deserving of all glory. God knew the Israelites would rebel against Him. However, He used even their disobedience to point to His glory. He would give them a new covenant despite their unfaithfulness. When He did so, it would point to the holiness of His name and to His mercy (Ezekiel 36:22–36). The covenant God made with the Israelites in Deuteronomy 29 looked ahead to this new covenant. The Purpose of the Covenant The old covenant called the Israelites to fear the Lord, to love Him, and to walk in His ways. It was meant to draw them into an intimate relationship with God. We are no longer under the old covenant, but we still need to both treasure God and obey Him. When we love Him above all else, we will keep His commandments (John 14:15). In the new covenant, He has given us a heart to do so.

Deuteronomy 29: Anticipating the New Covenant

While the four Gospels present the works and words of Jesus Christ, Paul’s epistle to the Romans explores the theological significance of His life and death. This letter is the most systematic presentation of theology in the Bible. But this is more than a theological treatise; it is a practical exhortation. Christianity does not consist merely of facts we must believe, but of a life we must live. The Gospel in Rome In the midst of Rome’s defunct polytheism, Christianity provided a practical alternative. Unlike the myriad of Roman rituals, Christianity balances theology with practice, and knowledge with action. However, it does not demand that we do good works out of our own strength. Instead, our walk stems from our wealth in Christ; our practice comes from our position in Him. The message of Christianity was unique among the Roman pantheon of gods. Those gods were essentially glorified humans, faults and all—and the faults were the gods’ most celebrated attributes. But the God of the Bible is righteous and holy and cannot abide with sin. Unlike those gods, He is moral and demands perfection, leading to the need for the good news of Jesus Christ. The Gospel of Salvation One of the key themes in the book of Romans is that of salvation. It looks at the penalty of sin, the power of sin, and the presence of sin—both for unbelievers and for believers. For those who do not believe, sin reigns and will lead to death. But those who believe in Christ are free from sin. They have the righteousness of Christ and are no longer condemned. Romans begins with the bad news from the start: Every person, whether Jew or Gentile, has sinned and suppressed the knowledge of God. But this bad news paves the way for the good news of salvation. We need to know our hopeless situation before we can grasp the beauty and glory of God’s mercy. When our sin is imputed to Christ, and His righteousness is imputed to us, God calls us to a new life. We are to be conformed to the image of Christ more and more every day, living our our faith.
