In Isaiah’s vision recorded in this chapter, he says he saw angels above God’s throne calling out, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty” (verse 3). This triple usage of “holy” is like today’s version of both bolding and underlining a piece of text. God isn’t just “holy.” He’s not even just “holy, holy.” He’s “holy, holy, holy.” No other attribute of God is raised to the third degree in the Bible as His holiness is.
Isaiah’s response to this vision is a holy terror and fear, leading to his spiritual disintegration before God. Only then is Isaiah—sometimes referred to as the “Paul of the Old Testament”—ready to receive God’s commission to him.
