Jesus had a countercultural view of women. Although women were often viewed as inferior in Jesus’ day, He treated them with the same dignity and worth as men in His ministry. Jesus’ even-handed treatment of women is on display in two Bible stories in particular. In John 4, Jesus interacts with a woman at the well—a Samaritan woman who had given her heart away in five previous marriages. Jesus’ disciples are amazed that He is speaking with such a woman. But because of her witness, many in that town believe in Jesus. In John 8, Jesus also speaks freely with a woman caught in adultery. He defends her by confounding her accusers and revealing their own hypocrisy. He does not gloss over her sin, but He confronts it and extends grace.
