Despite knowing the physical and spiritual anguish He would soon endure, Jesus was concerned only with the will of the Father. Unlike the first Adam who through his actions said to God “Not Your will but my will be done,” Jesus prayed humbly to the Father “Not my will but Yours be done.”
Despite the racial, gender, and social barriers that would normally prevent a rabbi from speaking to the woman at the well, Jesus shows that the grace of the Messiah has no boundaries.
Jesus knew that His hour had come. He would now enjoy the passover meal with His disciples, but would soon suffer as the passover lamb for the world.
What would you do if you knew you only had one week to live? A temptation for many would be to withdraw or hide away. Jesus, despite knowing that His hour was soon at hand, continued to work and minister to the people.
Jesus has a countercultural view of women. Rather than turning away from them, he treated them with the same dignity and worth due any other person.
Only those who are born again may see the Kingdom of God. Nicodemus, a member of the Sanhedrin, should have understood Jesus’ words.
Not every man is fit for a lecture. Fewer still have time or attention to engage in a drawn out discourse. However, there is something about a good story that grips us and draws us in. Could it be because we ourselves our part of the Great Story?
Rather than seeking approval from men, Jesus did that which was approved by God. Therefore, His actions and behaviors often seemed unconventional to those around Him.
Who is Jesus? He is many things. John tells us that He is the Word, God in the flesh, and the light and life of men. Most of all, this Jesus is the One who has come to save the world.
