In our previous reflection we began exploring the attributes of God. Some of these attributes belong uniquely to God and cannot be shared with created beings. These are often called incommunicable attributes. They include truths such as God’s independence, eternality, and unity. God exists independently of everything else. He does not depend on anyone or anything for His existence. By…

In this study we consider one of the most important themes in theology: the character of God. A.W. Tozer called this pursuit “the knowledge of the Holy,” and his classic book by that title remains one of the most profound reflections on God’s attributes. Understanding who God is does not merely expand our knowledge—it deepens our worship and strengthens our…

We have just completed a 38-week study of the Sermon on the Mount, and now we turn to a series of shorter studies on what the Bible says about God, Christ, and the Holy Spirit. In this article, we look broadly at what theology is, the nature of revelation, and the existence of God. The purpose of theology is to…

As we conclude this remarkable sermon, we are reminded again that Jesus is not offering a message that can be separated from Himself. The Sermon on the Mount is not merely a set of moral ideals. It is not a detached “ethic of the kingdom” that we may admire from a safe distance. Rather, His whole identity is expressed in…

We have come to the final two verses that conclude the Sermon on the Mount. Strictly speaking, these verses are not part of the sermon itself. Rather, they describe the response of those who heard it—both the crowds who were present and the disciples who had been with Jesus from the beginning. “When Jesus had finished these words, the crowds…

As we come to the end of the Sermon on the Mount, we stand before one of the most searching passages in all of Scripture. These are words such as the world has never heard. Matthew tells us that the crowds were astonished because Jesus was teaching them as one having authority, not as their scribes (Matthew 7:28–29). There was…

In the final section of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus presents one of the most sobering warnings in all of Scripture. He tells us that not everyone who calls Him “Lord” will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only those who do the will of His Father. These are not people who openly reject Christ—they call Him “Lord.” They…

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus has already told us about two gates, two paths, two crowds, and two destinations. These images aren’t just poetic—they are urgent. Jesus is saying that every person must make a choice. To ignore this call is itself a decision. We are always choosing a direction, and Jesus urges us to think carefully about…

Jesus summarizes the ethical heart of the Sermon on the Mount with what we now call the Golden Rule: “In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the Law and the Prophets” (Matt. 7:12). This is more than moral advice—it is a call to active goodness, grounded in love. It echoes…
